Fine Needle Aspiration Thyroid An Overview

Use Of Fine Needle Aspiration

Fine needle aspiration used to diagnose and differentiate between cancerous and noncancerous nodules. In fine needle aspiration, infected cells are obtained from lesions by using a thin needle. Fine needle aspiration is a rapid and effective method for the diagnosis of nodules. Fine needle aspiration also know as fine-needle aspiration biopsy(FNAB) and fine-needle aspiration cytology (FNAC).

Discovery Of Fine Needle Aspiration:-

The technique of fine needle aspiration is first introduced in 1930 by Martin and Ellis in the USA.

Types Of Fine Needle Aspiration:-

  1. Direct Fine Needle Aspiration.
  2. Ultrasound-Guided Fine Needle Aspiration.
  3. Endoscopy Guided Fine Needle Aspiration.
  4. CT Guided Fine Needle Aspiration.

1. Direct Fine Needle Aspiration

It is a very common technique in which the fine needle aspiration sample was taken in hospital by the nurse and in pathology lab by a pathologist or technician.

Requirements:-

  • Pillows
  • Blanket
  • Syringes
  • Gloves
  • Mask
  • Cotton
  • Needle
  • Screen for privacy
  • Alcohol swab for cleaning
  • Coplin jar
  • Slide tray
  • Bandage

Procedure for direct aspiration:-

  • Match all the details of the patients.
  • After checking the details of the patients take a mask and gloves.
  • Identify the nodules with the help of the middle finger or right hand.
  • After identifies the nodule inserted needle in the nodule lesion.
  • Withdraw the fluid in the needle remove the needle from the lesion.
  • Place the collected material on the side and make smear.
  • Stained with PAP and Giemsa staining.
  • After mounting perform microscopy.
Advantages of direct fine-needle aspiration:-

  • Economical and effective procedure.
  • Easy to perform this technique.
  • Extremely satisfactory result.

2. Ultrasound-Guided Fine Needle Aspiration

In this fine needle aspiration technique, we aspirate the sample under the guidelines of ultrasound images and aspirate the sample with the help of a needle. This technique is mainly used for thyroid gland nodules.

3. Endoscopy Guided Fine Needle Aspiration

In this fine needle aspiration technique, we aspirate the sample under the guideline of the endoscopy image and aspirate the sample with the help of a needle. This technique is mainly used for respiratory tract lymph nodules.

4. CT Guided Fine Needle Aspiration

In this fine needle aspiration technique, we aspirate the sample under the guideline of the CT images and aspirate the sample with the help of a needle. This technique is mainly used for deep cancer of organs such as lungs.

Complication Of Fine Needle Aspiration

After complications, fine needle aspiration is very rare. Minar bleeding occurs in the skin swollen area is known as a hematoma. Infection is very rare in fine-needle aspiration technique because of sterile equipment are used. The risk of fine-needle aspiration is very high in endoscopy guide fine-needle aspiration.

What Is Expect Before Fine Needle Aspiration

Do not eat and drink anything to several hours before the fine needle aspiration.
